In My Crib

2024

The project draws from Nikolay Gogol's "Diary of a Madman" and Nomadic Furniture, focusing on adaptability and versatility. Inspired by the play’s sparse room setting, I propose an adult crib made from wooden scaffolding. This unique piece merges functionality and symbolism, offering a private sanctuary akin to the protagonist's isolation in Gogol's work.

The choice of a crib evokes comfort and security. By repurposing it for adults, I challenge conventional perceptions and promote introspection. Its built-in library enhances functionality, enabling activities like reading, resting, or meditating.

A key aspect of my design is the ability to rejoin the joints, allowing for actual transformations of the crib into various forms such as a playground, shelter, hangout space, work area, or storage. Using the same wood with precise measurements, these transformations are practical and versatile, catering to different needs and environments.

This project redefines furniture by blurring the lines between living spaces and personal retreats. It emphasizes individuality and the intimate connection between the user and their environment. Integrating Deleuze and Guattari's rhizome idea, the design adapts to life's unpredictability and non-linear progression. Ultimately, it offers a transformative experience rooted in themes of confinement, introspection, and autonomy.

To support the rhizome concept, I created a handcrafted book composed entirely of envelopes. Users place booklet-shaped chapters, each corresponding to one of five different design alternatives, into the envelopes without reading the contents. As they start reading in their chosen order, they construct their own unique stories, reflecting the non-linear and unpredictable nature of life.
